HOW TO WASH YOUR HAIR THE RIGHT WAY

Miami, Florida

We learn how to wash our hair around the same time we learn the ABCs but, unlike the alphabet, chances are no one taught you how to properly wash your hair. Even small missteps in your process can have big consequences for your scalp and hair.

The real reason your hair looks (and feels!) so good after a trip to the salon is that the pros understand that the key to happy hair is a well-executed wash. Here are some tips on how to properly wash your hair.

The right products

Let’s start with your shampoo and conditioner selection. Make sure all products are sulfate-free, paraben-free, and ideally also cruelty-free. Make sure to consult with your stylist during your next appointment at HOM.

Emulsify

Make sure to emulsify. This simply means your shampoo should foam, if it doesn’t give it another wash and rinse thoroughly.

How to shampoo and condition

Now, where to actually apply shampoo. It depends on your hair but for normal hair focus on shampooing only your head (not the ends), as you rinse, the shampoo residue will take care of your ends. Make sure to rinse with warm water. Yes, warm water. Don’t worry we’ll get to the cold rinse soon. The reason you want to rinse your shampoo with warm water is so your hair cuticles open up, this makes it easier to absorb the moisture from the conditioner that you will apply to your hair ends.

cold rinse

You already knew this was coming, but finish rinsing with cold water after your conditioner, to seal the cuticle and lock in the moisture.

extra conditioner if needed

If you have thick or coarse hair and you feel like you need to give it a little extra hydration condition ends again.

Microfiber towel

The right towel is key to protecting your hair from breakage. So use a microfiber towel, you need less rubbing and it will dry your hair much faster than a regular cotton towel. I like this one best: Shop here

don’t brush wet hair

Lastly, don’t brush your hair in the shower, when your hair is wet, it is in its most fragile state. So towel dry with your microfiber towel and brush your hair once it is 75% dry. And voila!

Hope this helps! Let me know if you see a difference.
