CLEAN OR DIRTY HAIR BEFORE YOUR NEXT COLOR APPOINTMENT?

Miami, Florida

You may have heard conflicting things over the years on whether it’s best to wash or not to wash your hair before your next color appointment. The answer is: both are true, it boils down to what you’re getting done.

If you are getting a single-process color, i.E. when you are coloring your base or getting your regular grey coverage

Then avoid washing your hair right before coming in. Single-process color is applied right to the head and scalp, so washing your hair removes all the excess oils, which act as a protective barrier and actually help prevent irritation that can be caused by hair dye. It’s also important to know that most hair colors are designed to work better on hair that is not freshly washed. Lastly, those natural oils will help your colorist achieve a more even result.

If you are getting a double-process color meaning a toner or bleach

Then you really want to have dirty hair because bleach can irritate the scalp a lot more than regular hair dye. So those essential oils will protect your scalp from any uncomfortable itching sensation.

What if you are getting highlights or balayage?

In this case, clean hair is welcomed. Unlike single- or double-process color, highlights aren’t applied directly to the scalp, so it’s OK to come with clean hair, it’s actually better since lightening products perform better on clean hair. A lot of products, such as dry shampoos and leave-in-conditioners leave build-up so it’s best to wash your hair the day off. I recommend using K18 PEPTIDE PREP Color Safe Detox Clarifying Shampoo before a highlight service (we’ll have this product soon at HOM) it removes 99% product buildup, 95% sebum, 76% copper.

What if you’re getting a base and highlight on the same day?
