HAIR EXTENSIONS: DOs AND DON'Ts
Harbor Island, Bahamas
Let’s talk about hair extensions! Whether you want to add length, volume, or simply switch up your style for a big event, say your wedding day, hair extensions are a great option. Hair extensions help to hold the style and form better so it’s perfect for a special occasion.
Hair extensions look amazing, but they can be quite pricey so you want to make sure you take proper care, otherwise you will end up with matted hair, dull strands, or even worse, damage to your real hair. While extensions don’t grow from your scalp, the best way to maintain your extensions is taking care of them as you would your own hair.
I’ve outlined a few pro tips below that will help you get the most out of your extensions. So, first, let’s talk about the different types of extensions. There are several options depending on the time you are willing to invest in your extensions:
CLIP-INS:
My personal favorite, they are perfect to add length and/ or volume temporarily. Also they are your best option if you don’t have a lot of time on your hands. The best way to take care of your clip-ins is by washing and conditioning them. To add longevity, spray them with a leave-in conditioner and store them in a silk or satin bag. The frequency of washing and conditioning your extensions depends on how often you wear them but if you use your extensions on a regular basis, I recommend washing them at least every other week and at a minimum once a month.
TAPE-INS:
Are placed on thin tape wefts and sandwiched between your real hair. They aren't bulky if installed correctly; in fact, they look very natural and pretty undetectable. But, just like the other extension you have to take care of them, otherwise they can cause breakage to your real hair especially if they start growing in and twisting.
BRAID-INS or SEW-INS:
Are the best permanent extensions, they are literally sewn into cornrows or braids, and have the longest durability. However, remember that even with the best maintenance, you can't wear the same extensions forever. You should replace your extensions every six to eight weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows, to avoid matting and tangling.
Taking care of your extensions:
Matching your color:
If you are planning to color your extensions, then I recommend you buy hair that is lighter than your hair, it’s easier to darken the extensions than the other way around.
Taking care of your extensions:
Hair extensions require special treatment otherwise the hair will become dry and dull. Use products that you would use on your real hair. However, your extensions need extra hydration so use products that are hydrating and gentle on the hair. Since all extensions are chemically treated I recommend you use sulfate-free products.
Now that you know how to take care of your extensions, add those inches, honey.
