8 WAYS TO PREVENT OILY HAIR

Miami, Florida

Sure — glossy, messy hair is in these days. But you can definitely have too much of a good thing. That said, you don’t want to strip off all your natural oils, they are vital for a healthy scalp and healthy hair. Here are some tips to prevent greasy hair without damaging your hair or irritating your scalp.

1 CHOOSE THE RIGHT shampoo AND CONDITIONER

You might be using the wrong shampoo and conditioner. Make sure to choose a shampoo that works for your scalp, while choosing a conditioner that nourishes your ends.

2 WASH AND RINSE -THE RIGHT WAY

Yes, there is a correct way to wash your hair. When shampooing, focus on your scalp, where the oil is, rather than on the length of your hair. Don’t apply shampoo directly to the ends of your hair, instead, simply let the shampoo flow through the ends as you rinse. When conditioning, only apply to your ends, and be sure to rinse thoroughly. Add an extra minute of rinse time it will make a difference.

3 ALWAYS CHOOSE SULFATE-FREE

Look for sulfate-free products. Sulfates can dry your scalp by stripping out natural oils, this in turn drives the sebaceous glands into overdrive, and you are left with oily hair. All products used at HōM are sulfate-free. Book your next appointment

4 AVOID PRODUCT BUILDUP

A mistake many of you make is overusing products, especially those to cover up greasy hair, such as dry shampoo. I highly recommend an apple cider vinegar rinse, it helps remove product buildup, balances the pH of your scalp, and can even reduce frizz. Very important if you decide to use your pantry apple cider, make sure you dilute it properly. Otherwise I recommend Davines clarifying shampoo or the dP Hair Rinse

5 You are what you eat - greasy food = greasy hair

6 Genes - life is but a lottery

7 how often are you washing your hair?

This might seem counterintuitive but washing your hair too often can cause oily hair. If you’re already washing your hair once a day and you’re still greasy by day’s end, it might be worth playing with how frequently you wash your hair. Ideally, you should wash your hair no more than 3 times a week.

8 Consider a shower head for better water quality

Get a shower filter to improve the water quality in your shower - buildup form minerals and chlorine in our water can clog pores and by now you must know what happens then: clogged pores = oily scalp. Here are two of my favorite options. Both are available on my Amazon Shop:   Option 1 and Option 2

9 clean your styling tools

Clean your brush. This is a no-brainer but we all tend to forget sometimes. So here is a friendly reminder to clean your styling tools with a bit of shampoo or gentle soap to strip off any product buildup. Here is my favorite brush for scalp health

Hope this helps!
